What is a Belka?

The word Belka is a play on the similarities of the Russian word for squirrel and protein (the analysis of proteins is important to the SB3 mission). The name Belkaworks is inspired by the famous Skunkworks special research and development team at Lockheed Martin. Skunkworks is a term used in engineering and technical fields to describe a group within an organization given a high degree of autonomy and unhampered by bureaucracy, tasked with working on advanced or secret projects. Or in our case, stuff most fundraisers at nonprofit research organizations are afraid to do.

What is SB3?

SB3 or The Center for Systems Biology and Bioinformatics in Buffalo is a start-up nonprofit organization based in Buffalo, New York, formed under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and incorporated in the State of New York, conducting research in the fields of Systems Biology and Bioinformatics.

SB3's mission is to do research to help find cures for diseases and bring personalized medicine closer to reality.

Why should I help?

Because SB3 is a nonprofit organization, it needs many sources of funding. One of our goals is for SB3 to be as self-sufficient as possible.

One reason we created Belkaworks is to have an independent funding source that will give the researchers as much freedom as possible. Usually when someone gives you funding, they want something back and usually exert too much control. This often stifles innovation.

These are tough economic times for nonprofit research organizations. Unfortunately in these tight times funders become conservative and bold science suffers. Now, more than ever, research organizations such as SB3 depend on YOU to help them find cures for diseases.

We are just at the beginning of a renaissance in the fields of medical research. Belkaworks and SB3 are created to take advantage of these times.
